The surface of this painting has a very material imprint, so much so that it seems to be made up of piles of wet and compressed newspapers.
Frank Auerbach is universally known for his particular technique: swirling brushstrokes, almost swirls that cross over the painting and form legs, arms and faces.
Auerbach's paintings are not pleasant to look at and even less soothing. The viewer is invited to enter a world of twisted movements, seemingly carved from a substance similar to butter.
The painter is part of the School of London but detached himself almost completely from the trends of this art school, even if it must be said that it is a movement with few rigid rules.
Auerbach appears to be a sculptor, superimposing layers of color, manipulating and scratching them to remove.
Frank Auerbach inherits his artist's studio from his friend Leon Kossoff and works there with great discipline every day from morning to evening.

Comparing artists: Bacon, Kitaj, De Kooning, Kossoff, Sutherland
