Frans Hals - The Gypsy (c. 1628-1630)

Apparently we are faced with a work with few elements.
A background and a portrait, nothing more. Yet the brush stroke of Frans Hals varies so much from material to material that it gives the impression that the different fabrics, the skin, the hair and the plaster, and the painting or landscape behind the woman's shoulders are real materials present in a tangible way work.
Among the smiles of Art History one should never forget that of this woman, perhaps a Gypsy but probably a courtesan.
