El Greco - Saint Louis of France with a pageboy (1586-1596)

An idealized but extremely precise portrait in symbolism. The crown is a medieval attribute to the holy monarchs. That it is Louis of France can only be guessed from the decorations of the crown and scepter in which the famous lily appears. For El Greco, the pageboy is perhaps the most important character since it is his son Jorge Manuel. The light strikes the details in an incredible way and gives movement and often to the dark background. The pageboy and the saint are dressed in the fashion of the painter's time.
