Jacob van Ruysdael is one of the great interpreters of Nature's gigantism. In his paintings the landscape is enormous and dominates the work.
In this picture, looking very carefully, hidden and tiny there is a human being. That wanders in this environment that dominates and swallows it.
A nice metaphor for the human condition. A beautiful echo that cannot fail to remind us of that time when someone got lost in a dark forest ...
