Anton van Dyck - Portrait of Elizabeth and Philadelphia Wharton (1640)

Antoine van Dyck has always shown a great ability to portray children even if in this case the two little protagonists stopped being girls for the time of the pose.
The position of entering is an adult, a symbol of their social rank. The first, dressed in white, is self-confident while the second is more shy and cannot turn her head completely towards the observer.
The third protagonist, the little dog, serves to balance the composition and with the paw brings the two young ladies back to order, as soon as they finish posing they will go back to being girls.
