Tiziano Vecellio (?) - Danae (1546-1553)


Erotic images have always been liked and consequently have always had a success with the public and the market. After that first Danae made for Prince Ottavio Farnese (now at the Museo Capodimonte) the commissions for this subject have rained abundantly. A nice challenge for the time since there were no classic works on the theme to rely on.
This version was presented as an original by Titian, then downgraded by the workshop and now this figure is also undoubted. To tell the truth, she is very poor.
Danae's face is almost invisible and the hag is a caricature of herself, almost amateur.
